Today we travelled to Tiajin south of Beijing to pick up the defender. We caught a train that has a top speed of 350km. Took us 28 mins to get there. Will take about 3 hours to drive back!
We then drove to the ports to start negotiating for the release of the defender. We had 6 w'asian guides all jibberjabbering amongst themselves. We arrived at the building at 12 - were told thay have lunch until 1.30 so we waited in a cafe. 1.30 the guides go off to do their thing. We wait. 4.30 they come and get me and Greg to ask what is in the car.
We say we have given you a complete inventory list but they can't translate it all so it becomes just - camping gear, cooking stuff and clothes. They seem happy with that and say we can come back in the morning to look at the car........possibly even take it!
Woohoo!!
We had dinner. Everytime within 5 mins of sitting down a whole lot of dishes just appear on the table.
A kiwi translation of tonights dinner:Watercress in Peanut Butter
Jellyfish strips in sauce
Seaweed flaps
Lots of yummy dumplings
They also have a special tea here that tastes like chicken noodle soup with no salt.
We then rushed into to town centre for a boat ride. They love building / copying different architecture styles from particularly Europe. Hence a whole lot of Russian, French etc looking buildings. Makes the place look a bit like Disneyland.
