Day 13 – 15 July –Sukhbaatar Russian Border

So blardy hot today! Was 40 degrees and I’m sure almost 50 in the truck! Even our hotel room at 10pm is 30 degrees. We improvised today. I covered the sunroof with a piece of reflective emergency blanket. It worked well. I have no carpet in the defender – only rubber mats so quite a bit of heat has been coming up from underneath. So now we have put sheets of the same stuff under the mats. Hope it works – we were literally melting. As you may know the Land Rover air conditioning is not best, really it just blows hot dust around the car.
We drove through northern Mongolia today to Sukhbaatar ½ an hour from the Russian border. The border opens at 8.30 so we will be there at 7am to be at the start of the queue. It could be a long day. Best case scenario would be that we are on the other side by 2pm. Then a two hour drive to Ulan Ude.
We drive in convoy every day. Greg, Maurice and our local guide are first. Georgia and I are next and Murray and his son Ross are tail end Charlie. It works well and we have a system where the first car to overtake (remember we are on the other side of the road), radios back with whether it is clear or not.

A photo of our menu from dinner at the Selenge Hotel tonight is attached. Food is cheap. A plate of soggy fries is 60cNZ – your average dinner is NZD$8 or less.

Have you asked the others to take a few photos of you both. We may forget whet you look like :)
