Day 8 Zamyd Uud to Gobi Desert

Tonight I am in a gur tent in the middle of the Gobi desert with……. An ensuite,a fridge and a flat screen tv! It is better than some of the hotels we have been in. We did about 200 clicks today. It was hard going in some places. Mostly hard sand and gravel tracks. There is still a bit of green in the desert as they have had a late spring. We visited a monastery in the middle of nowhere and just on from it – The World Energy Centre where there is supposed to be some global energy in this spot that can charge your batteries! Didn’t work for me.

So our lesson today was “ Don’t piss into the wind”. For this trip we bought some shewees (J-OMG!  You have been taking the mick out of me for having one for years!!). A device that allows a woman to wee standing up. The purpose being that some of the toilets are absolutely disgusting and this would make it easier. So they had been going well until we stopped in the desert. We opened the two doors on the truck to hide us and away we go. But…… as we don’t normally do this we were unaware that blowback can be a big problem. There were screams from George, much snickering from me and one pair of wet undies on the aerial! Lesson learnt. (J-annnnnd.... Karma! hahaha SUCK!).

We met quite a few people as we were driving through. A herder pulling water out of a well for his goat herd. He was waiting for his horses to wander over as they do by themselves at the same time everyday as they know he will water them.  We also came across a horse race along the track with about 20 horses and riders.

It is the Nadam festival here this week. Which is basically one big party in the desert with wrestling, horse riding and archery. I have been nominated the archer for the group – we are in trouble!

We do 200km of track tomorrow, 50 km of road and another 80km of track to our next Gur camp. We did a night run tonight just for a bit of fun.  It is much easier to see the ruts but without the GPS we would be screwed.
